Telecommunications Day 2005

TUANZ Telecommunications Day 2005
in association with TelstraClear

This is a crucial year for telecommunications policy. Late in 2004 TUANZ adopted its new mission statement — "Targeting the Top Ten in the OECD for Communications Technology." Then in May 2005 the Government, through the recently released Digital Strategy, announced its aim of taking New Zealand into the top quartile for broadband performance by 2010. Given our performance at present these are bold targets, but with concerted action by the industry, government and users, they are capable of achievement.

The TUANZ Telecommunications Day 2005 focused  on these targets in the context of improving the quality of our telecommunications spend, our national policy settings, and the exchange of ideas about creative uses of the myriad of technologies that now converge around the Internet and can be used to enhance business productivity.

This year we focused on a specific case study — that of Denmark. This country of just 5.4 million people on the fringe of Europe outperforms New Zealand by nearly every telecommunications measure. TUANZ brought to this event ,in person, as keynote speaker the widely respected Danish telecommunications regulator, Jorgen Abild Anderson, to examine what the Danes have done so well that may offer lessons for New Zealand.
