BROADBAND FINDER

One clear message taken from the 2011 TUANZ Rural Broadband Symposium is that the rural community want broadband coverage extended even further than the current boundaries of the RBI.

MED is optimistic that they can still go further in New Zealand's rural coverage.  Telecom and Vodafone agree that savings from the RBI roll out will be redeployed into more broadband coverage.  What MED now need to do is to find out where the main areas of need are.

As Steven Joyce mentioned in his message at the symposium, MED launched the Broadband Finder widget.  This widget will tell you if an address is likely to be covered by the Rural Broadband Initiative.

MED has built a Registration of Interest function into the Broadband Finder widget so that people who don’t get covered by the RBI can put their hand up to be considered for future expansion of coverage.  It is not a guarantee that locations will get coverage but it’s a first step towards finding innovative solutions to provide broadband to those areas.
