When broadband became a defining Election issue Rosemary Sinclair, Chief Executive, Australian Telecommunications Users Group (ATUG) Last year, when the then Australian Leader for the Opposition Kevin Rudd promised to spend billions to bring Broadband to the Nation, it was a defining moment in his (successful) bid for the Prime Minister role. So why did broadband become an election issue and what can NZ users learn from the Aussie experience?
During her seven years heading ATUG, Rosemary Sinclair has seen vast changes in the political, regulatory and commercial aspects of Australian telecommunications. In this presentation she will summarise the current state of the industry, talk of how broadband and rural telecommunications services became a significant issue during the 2007 Australian federal election campaign, and update the role of the Australian government going forward. |

The rise and rise of mobile and unified communications Mike McLaughlin, Managing Director Mimac Marketecture Companies up and down the country are tripping over themselves and enthusiastic vendors to acquire and deploy new telecommunications technologies. Since there is so much hype about the latest must-have, unified communications, it can be difficult to know what to do. In its simplest form, a telecommunications device allows social interaction - taling (real time), or messaging (non-real time). A mobile device means that the device is almost always with the subscriber. Combining the two has caused a revolution in how society operates.
A specialist consultant in the provision and operation of telecommunications, telephony and contact-centre services, Mike McLaughlin is also the founder and former publisher of IT Brief, a monthly publication for senior executives on the procurement, deployment and use of ICT systems and services. |

Lessons from Finland Dr Stuart Corson, Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand Finland could teach New Zealand when it comes to creating a vibrant, informational society on the edge of the world. A country whose crowning jewel, Nokia, shines among an economic cluster of 3000 ICT companies at the cutting edge of new organisational thinking; and mobile and open software development.
According to Dr Corson - a regular visitor to Nordic countries since 1975 - the Finns have similar values and behaviours to New Zealanders but have taken their country to the forefront of global innovative capability. With just a modest R&D spend in the 1980s they have transformed their poor, agrarian economy into a technology powerhouse. Find out how they did it, while building their social welfare programme to secure their gains.
Dr Corson is widely experienced in technology development and commercialisation, nationally and internationally. He has been a member of both the Academy and Society Councils of The Royal Society of New Zealand, with a responsibility fore excellence in New Zealand science and technology. Dr Corson presently has a portfolio of consulting and business development activity that includes knowledge sharing, commercialisation of transformational forest and papermaking technologies with NZ, Nordic and South American interests, and specialist advice to the venture captial sector. |
