Real-time, real important: The video revolution comes to enterprise and government

An internet video revolution is well and truly underway thanks to web sites like YouTube and Joost. Now, the video revolution has gone mission-critical – and it’s coming to enterprise and government.

Traditionally, CIOs of large companies and government agencies cared most about two applications - voice and data communications. Now they're adding a third application to that list – real-time video communications.

That’s because real-time video can increasingly be delivered reliably across next-generation IP networks. And it's increasingly underpinning how our largest enterprises and government organisations save lives, protect people, manage assets, reduce costs and provide education opportunities that were previously unimaginable. Some examples are:

  •  In New Zealand, pupils in some of our most remote rural schools learn new languages by interacting with children from around the world via live video

  •  In Italy and Canada, doctors use video communications to remotely diagnose and treat patients

  • Video conferencing is one of the most important weapons the Australian military uses in its peacekeeping missions around the world

  • In the US, power utilities rely on real-time video surveillance to safeguard critical infrastructure

These new and emerging mission-critical video applications are being enabled by the transformation that is occurring within enterprises and government agencies around the world. This transformation is driving fundamental changes to networks, services and business operations, and opening up a raft of new challenges for CIOs (and the telcos they buy services from).

Alcatel-Lucent’s Josie Adlam and Matt Bostwick will explore this mission-critical video revolution and what it means for New Zealand enterprises and government agencies. Drawing on global insights and local experience, they will look at how innovative organisations are using real-time video applications today, and why video will become an even more important business application in the future.
