
Telecommunications Day 2007 was held on Thursday 31st May 2007 at The Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington. The event brought together a wide range of attendees from the telecommunications industry and featured some very interesting presentations from both local and international speakers. Full details on the days programme are featured below along with copies of the speakers presentations.

8.45 am Ilsa Godlovitch, Head of Regulatory Affairs, European Competitive Telecommunications Association (ECTA) in Brussels
Ilsa Godlovitch will deliver an overview of current telecommunications policy issues in Europe. Her focus will be especially on the regulatory frameworks that have led to some European countries becoming world leaders in competitive telecommunications services, and on the policy settings and practices required to ensure that next generation networks are configured and developed in ways that enhance competition and maximise their value to large end users.

1.45pm Wayne Maxwell Director, Strategy and Partnerships, Wellington City Council
Wellington City Council has recently adopted an ambitious vision for broadband connectivity. The Council is working closely with industry providers to ensure that the city can secure the economic and social benefits of 21st century broadband infrastructure, with fibre-to-the-home an ultimate objective. Wayne will talk about the important role that City Councils have to play in broadband and Wellington's progress toward making its vision a reality.

Leadership in IS industry (as well as aspects of military leadership)
Signals or signalling, in a military command and control sense, have traditionally been associated simply with transmitting or intercepting messages. The proliferation of electronic communication and information systems, however, has seen Signals expand to encompass a much wider range of activities supporting the command and control battle. At the core of the command and control battle is the concept of network centric warfare. This concept harnesses the power of modern information technology to transfer information rapidly between networked force elements. also hear Lieutenant Colonel Karyn Te Moana speak about military leadership and how these skills can be applied in the corporate setting.

SECURING OUR DIGITAL TRADE ROUTES
NZ Hitech Entrepreneur of the Year in 2006, Rod is founder and CEO of Accounting SaaS provider Xero having sold his last business AfterMail to US Public Company Quest Software in January 2006.
Rod was an Independent Director of TradeMe and SQL Services at the time of their acquisitions and continues on the TradeMe Advisory Board. Rod is also on the NZTE Beachhead Advisory Board.
Rod will talk about the role of telecommunications in developing technology export opportunities from New Zealand and share some experience from the field and new opportunities looking forward.

SUBSTITUTING ADSL FOR MANAGED NETWORK SERVICES
Carter Holt Harvey shares some experience of using ADSL where once managed leased lines were required. This session starts with a presentation on that experience and leads to a discussion on the parameters around where substitution is appropriate and where it isn't.

Richard Prebble was Minister of State Services at the time Telecom was readied for privatisation and sold. With seventeen years hindsight, hear how he views the outcome, the recent dramatic policy shift, and the result for the New Zealand public.
