TUANZ Supports Wellington City Fibre Initiative

Good on the Wellington City Council for taking a lead in getting something done about future connectivity.

Following a salvo from TelstraClear objecting to the Council getting into the space, TUANZ has taken the Council's side in this article in today's DominionPost.

The telecommunications industry has not covered itself in glory by under-investing in NZ's future network requirements. Isn't it then a bit rich for the industry to criticise Councils or others who try to fill the gap? We urge TelstraClear to work with the Council rather than against it.

Its hilarious. Clear and Saturn (the initial parts of TesltraClear) were foundation investors alongside WCC in CityLink, WCC's first effort to get decent broadband into the City 12 years ago. WCC altered the District Plan in the early 90's to draw an operator like Saturn into the space. TelstraClear only has a network outside the CBD thanks to that work. They've had 12 years to make a go of it and are now facing competition because they haven't delivered. Good on WCC for realising what is needed. Sadly its 2007, they should have heard the message earlier. As for TelstraClear - they're a phone company and destined to go the way of the dinosaur. Fred
