European regulators put a stop to roaming "bill shock"

Action by European regulators to eliminate roaming bill shock, effective this week, will be very welcome. I hope it spreads to this corner of the world.

Requiring mobile operators to pre-determine a ceiling for each customer's roaming is a very practical measure. Taken in conjunction with the regulated 60% reduction in roaming charges from July, this action should all but eliminate a source of enormous risk for inexperienced holiday makers, let alone business travellers.

Roaming bill shock, one of the scourges of the telecommunications market globally, is just as much an issue in the Asia Pacific region as proven by a TUANZ/INTUG survey I presented to an APECTel meeting late last year.

I have a strong feeling we will soon see regulators in this part of the world take some action to follow the European lead.
