Telecom has just announced its new chief executive is Dr Paul Reynolds, the current CEO of BT Wholesale. He will be based in Auckland and will take up in role in late September. Until that time Simon Moutter will be acting CEO.

Chairman Wayne Boyd said Reynolds was chosen following an international recruitment process.

"Globally there are few leaders in the telecommunications industry with Paul's combination of skills, knowledge and experience," Boyd said.

"Paul has led programmes of significant change at one of the world's largest telecommunications companies in a regulatory environment that has parallels to New Zealand's."

Clearly his experience with the operational separation of BT and with building its next generation network made Reynolds the front runner for the role. In 2005 – 2006 he designed and led BT’s access network operational separation and the creation of OpenReach. In addition, he has executive responsibility for BT’s 21st century network.

TUANZ CEO Ernie Newman says he looks forward to welcoming Reynolds to New Zealand.

“TUANZ is pleased that one of the contributing factors to the period of uncertainty for Telecom staff is now over and that the company can now start to make some progress in restoring stability,” says Newman.

“We’re also pleased at having the new CEO come from British Telecom where he has been deeply involved in the three-way operational split successfully implemented there. This experience should be of huge value to Telecom as they move down a similar track.”

More details about the appointment can be found on the Telecom website.
