Dysfunctional international mobile market

Here's a really good analysis of what's wrong with the international mobile phone market, released today by INTUG, the International Telecommunications Users Group of which TUANZ is a member.

Much of it, and especially the sections about international mobile roaming, will resonate strongly with TUANZ members.

So too will the plea (para 6.3) for regulators around the world to follow the lead of the European Commission in working toward Bill and Keep mobile termination rates. As the Report notes, in most of Europe MTRs are 4 to 5 times the cost of providing the service. (Lucky them - in New Zealand the differential has been far greater.)

Other parts of the paper are more Euro-centric, including that dealing with the desire of multi-national corporations to buy mobile services on a global basis in a market that forces them to purchase country by country.

Its one of the best papers I've seen come out of INTUG for quite some time and I trust it will get the attention it merits.
