In striking contrast to New Zealand’s extortionate mobile termination rates of 20c/minute, Aussie regulator the ACCC has today issued new costings giving an indicative price of A9 cents (NZ9.63 cents) a minute. These costs are current and will form the basis of any access arbitrations from this weekend.
This costing compares to the astonishing deal the New Zealand government, acting against the advice of our regulator, did with Vodafone and Telecom just two months ago. which reduces the equivalent price over a five year glide path from the current 20c, to 12c-14c.
TUANZ at the time roundly condemned the Government’s rejection of the advice of its specialist regulator, and the soft settlement with the phone companies.
At a time when the underlying cost of termination, and the international prevailing prices, are falling like stones, the new ACCC costings are still further evidence of the disservice the government has done.
