Another mobile virtual network operator has launched – this time on Telecom’s network.
Digital Island, an Auckland-based provider of telecommunications services, has signed on to become an MVNO on Telecom’s network as it adds mobile phone services to its existing range of voice and data products.
The addition of mobile services to Digital Island’s business product range is crucial, says general manager Blair Stewart.
“With the addition of mobile, Digital Island now offers a complete suite of telecommunications services for its target market of medium-sized New Zealand businesses.”
Stewart adds the company decided to partner based on a strong existing relationship with the carrier and Telecom’s proven ability to deliver wholesale products.
Digital Island’s mobile services will be sold, serviced and billed directly by the company. It will initially launch on Telecom’s CDMA network, but plans to eventually migrate onto Telecom’s new W-CDMA network.
Digital Island will carry out a two month pilot with existing customers from April and plans to have a full commercial service from July.
The company will use its own number range and its handset range will include models from Samsung, Sanyo, Nokia and Blackberry.
Digital Island’s entry as an MVNO puts the score up to two each for Telecom and Vodafone. TelstraClear is Telecom’s other network passenger, while Vodafone has Black + White and Compass.
TUANZ welcomes Digital Island to the fold – an additional player in this space gives users a bit more choice – even if it still remains within the bounds of our current mobile duopoly.
