Herald Readers Condemn Broadband Speeds

The Herald's survey of the speeds its readers experience on broadband connections says it all - Kiwis are totally dissatisfied with the pace at which broadband is being delivered in this country.

Much of the content of the article is predictable. Telecom's competitors, and to be fair TUANZ, have long-held views.

The added dimension is the disconnect between readers' views and Telecom's.

Perhaps the most disappointing element of the story is Telecom's response - "solutions....require hundreds of millions of dollars."

So?

Isn't that what service providers are meant to do - invest so their customers can keep up with modern day needs? Hasn't Telecom consistently been caught out under investing? Isn't NZ the country with the lowest telecomms investment rate and highest costs as a proportion of GDP?

Aren't New Zealanders entitled to better? That our speeds are below par is an established fact. We are technically savvy, and entitled to know what the industry leader has in mind by way of a solution. Retreating into cliches, while customers are frustrated by unsatisfactory service, just doesn't wash any more.

Come on Telecom - please spill the beans and give us some hope.
