2degrees arrives on August 5

New Zealand’s long-awaited third mobile operator will open its airwaves for business next Wednesday, August 5.

2degrees has used Twitter to announce the  launch date a couple of hours ago.

Meanwhile it is hosting a media event next Tuesday where it will reveal its full range of services, prices and handsets, which it says is just the beginning of 2degrees’ efforts to bring true value to New Zealand mobile phone users.

TUANZ will attend the event and will report of what we see as soon as possible, so be sure to check our blogs for updates next Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 50,000 Kiwis have signed up to 2degrees’ Join the Chinwag campaign – exhausting its allocation of free SIM cards which will be sent out to all those who registered along with $5 worth of credit.

The challenge will now be for the company to keep these initial users on its network. If it succeeds that would represent quite a good customer base to launch from.

The launch of 2degrees, along with Telecom’s XT roll-out in July, is certainly the start of a more competitive mobile landscape for New Zealand.

In fact, about an hour after 2degrees’ announcement Vodafone declared it was launching New Zealand’s cheapest mobile-only phone plan.

A coincidence? What do you think?

However, the true test will still be if 2degrees can sustain the burden of excessive mobile termination rates, which still threaten to impair its introduction to the market.

don't care how much Vfone and Telecom try and undercut 2 degrees. It has suited both incumbents to rip off their mobile and fixed customers for years. I shall have great pleasure in giving Vfone and Telecom the two fingered salute and transferring all my mobile business (and friends) to 2 degrees mobile. I have been waiting for true competition for years.

It is my intention to support 2 degrees.

If 2 degrees does not beome strong, they will not have the strength to drive down mobile pricing in New Zealand.

If 2 degrees becomes strong, they will have the ability to drive down mobile pricing based on that strength.

I, for one, will not take any new offerings from Telecom or Vodafone. It would be a short term gain at the expense of longer terms reduction in pricing. All 2 degrees have to do is match Telecom or Vodafone, not even beat them, then my $'s go to 2 degrees.

It is only when a third entrant enters the market and gains good market support that prices drop. (that is also why I buy my diesel from Gull) I should know. I was once responsible for setting business toll pricing at the old Clear Communications. I did not drop prices until other entrants entered the market. I didn't need to. Telecom and Clear were basically a duopoly and had no interest in reducing their Gross Margin and ARPM.

Long live competition and third players in the market I say.

I do hope that 2D succeeds in the NZ market. The last thing I want to see is them fail and maybe sell out to TelstraClear and then we will have a "triopoly"..
