Interesting news from Chorus today.  They've come up with an option to rewire homes getting poor quality broadband due to substandard wiring and at teh same time will future-proof the houses providing dedicated connections for internet telephones and net-connected TV's.
Chorus would install a service delivery point for about $200.  Customers will be able to order the work through their internet provider.

Sky TV also announced their plans to revisit their online media platform later this year, after pulling a similar service this time last year due to low broadband speeds and data caps.  The online media platform, named iSky, will be rolled out in four phases starting later this year.

The service will eventually be available to non-Sky subscribers, and on third party platforms such as XBox, iPad, Playstation and internet-enabled TV.

The dream of high speed internet is a nice one, but from what I understand the primary & secondary cabling is a major issue - basically out here in Tawa its stuffed, very old technology. The paper insulation that was used 40 years ago has long since been surpassed by plastic, but since telecom owns the cables, there seems little (or no) incentive for them to replace them. I was lucky enough that the technician found one last usable pair in the secondary underground cable running up my street, so at least the problems I was having have now been solved, but to move the great leap forward is not possible without new cabling up to my front gate, and I can't see that happening without major government funding.
