Wise words on copyright

TUANZ Chairman Chris O'Connell drew my attention to this pertinent post from Adam Smith's blog - "The Inquiring Mind."

There is certainly no shortage of angles around this contentious issue.

Meanwhile Judith Tizard, the Minister who drove Section 92a through parliament, has come out in its defence - somewhat at ofdds with her own party.

The curious question about all this is who it is trying to protect - the musos and actors, or the record companies and intermediaries who make a living by administering copyright on their behalf. Looks like most of the noise is coming from the latter.

Isn't the "Copyright Protection Industry" a bit like the tow truck people who tow away overstayers from car parks? Thney started as a service to the car park owners, but soon became a big industry in their own right. So now they have a vested interest not in keeping car parks free of overstayers, but in creating conditions where as many people as possible overstay so they can maximise their tow aways and keep their compunds full of cars.
