The Commerce Commission is producing really high quality market monitoring reports these days, based in part on the regular OECD benchmarks but adjusting for specific New Zealand characteristics.
The Monitoring report it released yesterday is very heartening from a user perspective. While we’re still a long way from the TUANZ vision of “Top Ten in the OECD for Communications Technology” we’re moving fast in the right direction.
Please scan the whole report. Here’s some of what you’ll find:
- Its been a HUGE year for investment in mobile. 2Degrees has launched, and XT is live.
- Several MVNOs have launched. Until now these have had limited independence from Vodafone, the sole host network. However, the coincidental announcement yesterday that XT is open for business as a host network, and will start with Digital Island, will unleash them. It will upgrade their status from being a tactical tool of a single host network, to free operations with the ability to change from one host to another as the market dictates.
- 2Degrees' pricing has made a dramatic downward impact on price comparisons with other OECD countries, especially for low and medium volume users on prepay.
- Broadband uptake is motoring ahead and prices are declining.
Read it for yourself – just about all good news!
