“You guys are one of the tightest and most focused teams I’ve seen in the business world.”

High praise from TUANZ Chairman Chris O’Connell here at the TUANZ field trip to Northpower in Whangarei.

Chris was, of course, talking about our hosts, the management team at Northpower – headed by CEO Mark Gatland who incidentally is the brother of long-serving TUANZ Board member and Treasurer David Gatland.

“All your team is right on the same message,” Chris told the Northpower team in opening day two of the visit. “You’d be equally successful whatever business you were in.”

The 23 participants in the field trip come from a wide range of TUANZ membership from the Bay of Islands through to Ashburton.

I can only endorse Chris’s comments. Having been involved with CLEAR’s local network deployment in the 1990s, both as a Product Development Manager and acting Local Business Unit manager, I know from first hand experience the types of traps it is easy to fall in to. Northpower have taken a lot of time and paid good attention to ensure they do the back office things right; from engineering design, as builts, end to end processes as well as handoff for customer support. It certainly proves that the power companies not just telcos are efficient and capable network operators in the Layer 1 and Layer 2 space.

TelstraClear have an exclusive for Northpower’s fibre roll-out for the next 9 months. With their local backhaul capacity from Whangarei to Auckland, they are in a unique position to roll out new products in a safe and controlled environment. POTS is not the killer app these days and I sincerely hope that there are a bunch of product managers sitting in Takapuna brainstorming innovative new IP based products that will leverage off an FTTP network. If they don’t, hopefully someone else will come 31st January 2010.
